Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to make money online. By easy, I in no way mean to imply there is no work involved. I mean, easy, as in you do not need products of your own or any of the headaches that come with it.
There is definitely work involved but we will get to more about that in just a bit. The question is, Can YOU make money affiliate marketing? My answer to that questions is yes, absolutely!
You are hopefully already writing about stuff that you enjoy or are passionate about. Incorporating affiliate marketing into your business is a natural way to make additional money. You simply promote a product and receive payment from the retailer once that product is purchased due to your efforts. It is a win-win when it comes to having your own online business.
I am sure you have seen many sites promoting affiliate marketing as a get rich quick scheme, using screenshots of their fancy cars, big mansions and over the top pay out checks. I find these tactics to be a total turn off but many fall for them and end up buying their useless products in hopes of achieving the same type of success.
Unfortunately that is not reality. It will take a lot of hard work and one how-to product promising thousands of dollars in a week all on auto pilot will not get you there. Affiliate marketing is all about your website, traffic and trust none of which will happen overnight.
You cannot acquire any of those things without a lot of dedication, desire, and due diligence. I call this the 3 D’s of Affiliate Marketing, catchy huh? Okay, well, maybe not, but it really is true. Do not ever fall for the hype, it will lead to disappointment and possibly anger at being taken advantage of. I know cause I have been there.
Most people simply give up long before they achieve success because it is too hard or they failed once or twice and then end up blaming it on a program they bought or just bash the online thing altogether as being a scam. Don’t let that happen to you.
You may have gotten into this online thing to have more time and financial freedom, but in the beginning, it will be far from that. If you are serious, you will be tied to your computer doing research, learning skills, and writing, writing, writing! Long term success never comes easy. There will be ups and downs along the way. But, if you stick with it, you will be able to look back one day and be very thankful you did.
Every online affiliate marketer failed before they become a success. It is just life and the nature of staring up any business. Be one of the few and stick it out. You will see results if you learn the proper techniques and apply them each and every day.
I cannot stress this enough hence the red font, in bold and centered :-). Do not be one of those people who continually learns but never applies. This is typically due to fear of failure but continuing in this way will set you way back and success will continue to elude you.
So you have your site up and running. You are putting out posts several times a week about your favorite hobby and are seeing some traffic but have not yet incorporated any affiliate products. This is a great time to do so. In my opinion, adding an affiliate program to your site should occur once you begin to gain some traffic and trust.
You want to look for products that are in line with your niche. It gets really confusing when you land on a site about XYZ and they have links to products for ABC. It just doesn’t make sense and visitors may not understand what your site is about and end up leaving as a result.
An example, I was on a site recently that appeared to be about travel but in the sidebar there were several banners that had to with online marketing and domain names. It did not make any sense to me as the people going to the site are probably looking for travel info/deals and will be very confused by marketing banners.
There are a ton of affiliate programs to choose from, too many really. It can be overwhelming. First, I would only choose an affiliate program with a good reputation such as Amazon, EBay, or even WalMart. Those are just a few, there are a lot more. However, you must do your research to ensure you are not promoting products on your site that have a large amount of bad reviews. You do not want a bad product attached to your name/site as they may hinder trust you have worked hard to build with your visitors. In addition, confirm the company is legit and pays on time.
I would never suggest promoting a product you have not used or at least have good knowledge about just to make a commission. This is your reputation, so be sure you are not just signing up for anything that looks good with a high pay out.
You know your audience, or at least you should, better than anyone. What are they searching for? Once you have that figured out, product selection becomes that much easier. Everything should fit together.
An important marketing tactic to consider is adding product reviews on your site if you have not already. People love comparisons and are constantly searching Google for product reviews. If they already trust you, it will be that much easier to sell a product you recommend.
If you go this route, make sure you do thorough reviews that include both Pros and Cons. And, check to be sure there is a demand for the products you promote or else the odds of someone buying is pretty slim no matter how much they like you:).
This is so important and should be a regular part of your routine with any online business. Testing various aspects of your site such as ad placement, banner types, product type etc will allow you to know what works and what doesn’t. Continuing to do the same thing over and over with little in the way of results simply because you were not aware will only delay your success.
At the end of the day, you can make money as an affiliate marketer, a lot of people are; however, far more quit before they ever reap the rewards of their hard work. The more you are committed to learning and then applying that knowledge each and every day, the closer you will be to long term success.
Please leave any comments or questions below. I love to hear about what others are experiencing in this business, the good and the bad.
Have a great day!
